Dimitri P. Mikhailidis graduated from the University of London (BSc, MSc, MB,BS and MD) and is the former Academic Head, Department of Clinical Biochemistry, Royal Free Hospital campus, University College London Medical School, University College London (UCL), UK. He continues with academic duties after partial retirement.
He also is a Visiting Professor, Univ. of Belgrade, Serbia, and two universities in Saudi Arabia (King Saud Univ., Riyadh, King Khalid Univ., Abha). His clinical interest is vascular disease prevention, and his research interests are dyslipidaemias and thrombosis. He is a former Wellcome Trust fellow and has supervised 15 doctoral students (University of London).
He is a former Vice-president, Section of Pathology, Royal Society of Medicine. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath), Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP), Fellow of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine (FFPM) and Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacology (FCP). He is one of the members of the executive council of the International Atherosclerosis Society (IAS). He is also a Foreign Member of the Slovenian Academy of Medicine.
He has 1219 entries on PubMed and 26,667 citations listed in the ISI index, Core Collection (H-factor = 70). He has been cited by 15,242 publications where he was not an author. He is editor-in-chief of several journals including Current Medical Research and Opinion, Current Vascular Pharmacology, Expert Opinion on Pharmacotherapy and Angiology (impact factor up to 3.9). He has acted as referee for 108 medical journals. He is ranked as number 1 in the world in the field of lipid lowering drugs (http://expertscape.com/ex/hypolipidemic+agents).
He has participated in several guideline committees. He is a former member of the nucleus group for peripheral arterial disease, European Society of Cardiology. He is the lead for the Prevention Section of the European Society of Vascular Surgery Guidelines for the Management of Carotid Artery Disease. He has lectured in 50 countries.
He was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of St. Mark (Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa) for services to the Greek community outside Greece. He holds Honorary Doctorates from 7 Medical Schools in Greece.
