Olivier Descamps

Professor Olivier Descamps attended the University of Louvain, Belgium (UCL), where he graduated in Medicine in 1986 and specialized in Internal Medicine in 1991. He obtained a PhD degree in Public Health at the same institution in 2007. In 2011, he obtained an interuniversity certificate in Ethics of Health Care (Faculty of Namur and UCL).
He is a specialist in cardiovascular prevention and lipidology at the department of internal medicine of the Hôpital de Jolimont (since 1991) and at the department of cardiology of the Cliniques Universitaire Saint-Luc (since 2016). He is Director of the Jolimont Research Center since 2001 and President of the Ethics Committee of the Centres Hospitaliers Jolimont since 2011.
His research focuses on genetics and on the treatment of dyslipidemia, and particularly familial hypercholesterolemia. During his career, he collaborated with the Professors and Medicine Nobel Prize laureates, Michael Brown and Joseph Goldstein in Texas, as well as with Professor Heller at the Hospital of Jolimont, with Professor Steve Humphries at the College University of London and with the European Atherosclerosis Society. In 2007, he defended a PhD thesis in Public Health on the genetic epidemiology of familial hypercholesterolemia in Belgium. He has received numerous scientific awards for his work. Finally, he founded the association of patients suffering from familial hypercholesterolemia in 2015. He is currently president of the Belgian Society of Atherosclerosis/Belgian Lipid Club.
